PRISCILLA AUCHINCLOSS : Associate Director, Continuum Movement Arts and Yoga Instructor
Priscilla Auchincloss has been seeking to understand how the world works - the “bare bones of what things are” - for most of her life. She spent her early twenties studying modern dance and ballet in New York City. She then studied physics, earning a Ph.D. in that field, and spent many fruitful years in academia investigating, among other things, the role of gender in the culture of science. Her questing spirit eventually led her back to the realm the body and to movement as a way of both knowing the world and healing the modern soul. Leaving the university, she established and ran Physikos, a studio dedicated to the art and science of movement, from 2008 to 2013.
Priscilla completed teacher authorization in Continuum with founder Emilie Conrad in California, and earned certification in Iyengar-style yoga with Francois Raoult at Open Sky Yoga in Rochester. Other key influences include Olivia Corson’s BodyTales and Augusto Boal’s Theater of the Oppressed. She is associate director of Watermark Arts, a project exploring the ways somatics inspires art, learning and community.
Understanding movement as the foundation of daily life, she practices, writes and teaches with a sense of open inquiry and delight in discovery. She lives in Rochester with her two children and a dog named Mousse.
