In this workshop lead by Instructor Katherine Marino, students will practice basic principles of contemporary partnering: we will work with weight-sharing, improvisation, and trust while we balance, lift, and climb on each other in creative ways. Differing from more classical forms of dance or acrobatic partnering, we approach this technique without the traditional roles of “base/flier” or “leader/follower.” Instead, roles will be in constant flux, sometimes unsure of who is lifting and who is being lifted, and individuals of all genders and body types are encouraged to work together.
This is not a “dance class” – although previous dance or movement training is helpful, in this class we focus on various structured and improvisational exercises rather than set choreography or dance steps. This is a wonderful training opportunity for actors, dancers, acrobats, and athletes.
Requirements: Curiosity and playfulness. Must be comfortable working in physical contact with the other participants.
