Free Yourself Workshop Series: Liberate Your Spirit: Dynamic Meditation

(Workshop #3) Liberate your Spirit: Dynamic Meditation

In this workshop with Instructor, Audra Dion, we will use an active meditation. This meditation is like nothing you have ever experienced before and will powerfully help you to access and release deeply held stress in the body. Get ready to unleash toxic energy being held in your body in a fun and dynamic way. OSHO created this technique as a means of helping Westerners who came to his ashram in India access meditation more readily because he found that they were so wound with tension that it was impossible for them to sit in meditation.

Are you someone that is curious about meditation but feels like it is impossible to sit still? Come access meditation in a whole new way and discover a powerful tool that you can take with you into your life for relaxation and spiritual discovery.

Cost: $20pp / all mats and props are provided / space limited to 20 guests

Free Yourself Workshop Series: Liberate your Body: Body Mapping & Gentle Flow Yoga

(Workshop #1) Liberate your Body: Body Mapping & Gentle Flow Yoga

Find greater freedom in your body through a creative Kripalu inspired body mapping exercise designed to access where you are sub-consciously blocking energy in your body. We all have a tendency to tighten in response to life’s difficulties, in fact we do it so often, that we tend to be completely unaware of habitual ways that we clench and hold. This chronic tension creates dullness and disease in the body.

In this workshop with Instructor, Audra Dion, you will be tapping into your creativity by using color and drawing, but don’t worry no skill is required! This is self-discovery, not an artistic workshop! You will then take your findings onto your mats, moving through a gentle asana sequence that will open your nadis (energy channels) and actively free the stagnant energy in your body. You will leave feeling liberated, open, and energetic.

Cost: $20 / all yoga mats and props are provided as well as art supplies / space limited to 20 participants

Partnering & Improvisation: Lead, Follow, Listen

Lead by Instructor Katherine Marino { Katherine Marino Dance } of Rochester's own PUSH Physical Theater { http://www.pushtheatre.org/ }

Students will practice foundational concepts of contemporary partnering such as touch, weight-sharing, and lifting. Unlike classical forms of partnering, we approach this improvisational technique without the traditional roles of “base/flier.” Within this improvisational form, the roles of  “leader” and “follower” are in constant flux, changing from one moment to the next. In this workshop we explore the contradiction of being both “follower” and “leader” within the same moment, while emphasising the importance of presence and physical listening. Individuals of all genders and body types are welcome and encouraged to work together.

Although previous dance or movement training is helpful, in this class we focus on various structured and improvisational exercises rather than set choreography or dance steps. This is a wonderful training opportunity for actors, dancers, acrobats, and athletes.

Requirements: Curiosity and playfulness. Must be comfortable working in physical contact with the other participants. Adults 18+.

Price:

Pre-Registration: $15 / Same Day: $17

College Student Discount: Pre-Registration: $12 / Same Day: $14

*It is NOT necessary to bring a partner.

*Limited to 10 participants to ensure safety and individual attention. Advance reservation recommended. Click HERE to signup now!

Closing Artist Reception for "Using numbers to make art", a solo exhibition by Shamira Nicolas

ARTIST'S STATEMENT:  The exhibit contains twenty pieces of my paintings ranging from 8x10 to 30x40 inches.

The body of work represents the many ways I break down numbers and then rearrange them in new formations depending on the subject matter and the requirement of the work.  I also use different sizes of numbers in the same painting.

Using numbers from different cultures create works that automatically reflect that culture. This subject provides me with two essential needs; universality and the ability to work with a limited number of forms.

This Art Exhibition can be viewed by all those attending classes seven days a week, or by booking an apointment with our Exhibition Coordinator, Sharon Locke (585) 732-9030

Partnering & Improvisation Workshop

In this workshop lead by Instructor Katherine Marino, students will practice basic principles of contemporary partnering: we will work with weight-sharing, improvisation, and trust while we balance, lift, and climb on each other in creative ways. Differing from more classical forms of dance or acrobatic partnering, we approach this technique without the traditional roles of “base/flier” or “leader/follower.” Instead, roles will be in constant flux, sometimes unsure of who is lifting and who is being lifted, and individuals of all genders and body types are encouraged to work together.

This is not a “dance class” – although previous dance or movement training is helpful, in this class we focus on various structured and improvisational exercises rather than set choreography or dance steps. This is a wonderful training opportunity for actors, dancers, acrobats, and athletes.

Requirements: Curiosity and playfulness. Must be comfortable working in physical contact with the other participants.

Subtle Body Yoga w/ Sound & Acupuncture

In the practice of subtle body yoga with Instructors Fayebriel Barrette and Serenity Carlyle, we direct our intention beyond the physical body and into the realm of pure energy. Using gentle restorative poses to relieve muscle tension, and increasing circulation gives our bodies a chance to fully relax allowing our minds to do the same.

Imagine opening your body's energy with restorative yoga then adding in focused acupuncture points specially chosen to accompany those postures. You will be fully supported with bolsters and blankets, letting the needles open up the blockages in your meridians, restoring vitality. Faye will then come around the room and perform sound healing with singing crystals and medicine drumming raising your frequency and sending healing vibrations directly into the needles.

This workshop will last about 2 hours and will touch on Yoga and Chinese Medicine principles to help increase your knowledge and awareness of your body's subtle energy . You will leave feeling restored, changed, and floating. Sit with us after for some tea, and let the healing sink in before venturing back out into the busy world.

*If you are uncomfortable with needles, Serenity will bring her micro-stim machine, which gives a gentle pulse to acupuncture points, without being invasive.
*Safe for pregnant women and people of all ages. Just let us know when you arrive that you are pregnant or have any other health concerns.

How do I work this? Introduction to The Alexander Technique

Do you ever wonder how to move more easily, how to go through life without pain or discomfort, or even how to learn new things without old habits getting in your way?  The Alexander Technique teaches people to move well, with fluidity and ease, and specifically addresses old unconscious habits that interfere with free movement and can cause pain. We are normally unaware of our habitual movement patterns, acquired over years, and by the time they result in discomfort, pain or injury they are so ingrained that their absence can be confounding.

Sometimes postural habits create obstacles to free movement and can even cause injury. Discover the answer key that will enable you to undo old habits and move fully into the present. The Alexander Technique is a century-old method that employs anatomical fact, mental awareness, and the human ability to choose consciously, along with the skilled eyes and hands of a teacher, to re-educate the body and mind to work more harmoniously.

In this workshop with Instructor, Tara Sullivan, we will investigate some of the most common habits that interfere with free and easy movement. Suitable for people with or without injuries or pain; performers, singers, musicians; desk jockeys looking for relief; anyone curious about their own use and functioning. Come with a sense of curiosity and interest and leave feeling lighter, easier, and more present.

*Space is limited to 20 participants / $25pp / All materials are provided / Click HERE to register online.

Join us during First Friday Citywide Gallery Night for an evening filled with art, discussions and lite refreshments. Artist, AJ Dungan will be in attendance to elaborate on his work and the creative process. This event is free and open to the public.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

To understand my art, you must question how and why it requests your participation. The images I create, though they may have an air of incompletion, should take your hand, leading your mind to its next destination. Much like a puzzle, you as the viewer are invited to navigate through the fractured and partial forms, completing a story that is unique to you. These compositions are intended to create a feeling of motion within a momentary event.  Their purpose is rooted in the uncertainty that innately exists within our romantic relationships, feelings of love and sensuality.  As you view my work, I invite you to explore and play with the vast array of shifting planes and changing perspectives that it embodies.  Here, I challenge you to join me in the act of re-composition and encourage you to discover something different each time you view it.

Autumn Equinox: Qigong for the Lungs

5:30 PM17:30

Autumn Equinox: Qigong for the Lungs

This is the perfect time of year to work on strengthening and balancing our lung qi, as well as to release negative emotions that are associated with the lungs which often tend to arise during Autumn.

As the weather gets cooler and the humidity of summer leaves, the seasonal energy shifts to the element of metal, which corresponds to the energy of the lungs. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the lungs are impacted by the negative emotions of sadness and grief. They are the bellows which move qi throughout the body and they govern the energy of our protective energy field called the Wei Qi field, which corresponds to our innate immune system, and works to keep pathogens at bay. Each organ has both positive and negative traits and emotions associated with it and the positive traits of the lungs are courage and integrity. Qigong can help us to develop those positive traits over time. Each organ is also represented by a color and an animal. In the case of the lungs, the color is white and the animal is a white tiger.

Symptoms of lung energy imbalances include obvious lung issues like asthma, coughs, bronchial issues, sinus problems, and allergies, but also constipation (the lungs are partners with the large intestines), and skin problems like dry skin and eczema, since the lungs influence our skin's protective mechanisms.

Please click HERE to pre-register for this special seasonal class / space is limited to 15

Then we will each create our own bracelet to wear as a daily reminder of who we want to be, who we NEED to be, to create the life we dreamed of.

The Workshop:

We will circle up and take a relaxed approach to the discussion portion of this workshop. Enjoy lite refreshments and wine as we discuss..well, LIFE! It's so easy to get caught up in day to day life and then before you know it, days, weeks, months have gone by and you feel like you are stuck in the same place. As time goes by, you lose a little bit more of who you are and who you dreamed you could be. You have let society's "shoulds" get in the way of all your "coulds" you believed were possible. We will discuss how to get excited about YOU again!

The Bracelet:

After the discussion portion of this workshop, we will all be making our own leather and sterling silver stamped bracelet for you to keep. Each participant will select a word or affirmation that speaks to their own personal goal or mantra. This will serve as a daily reminder that you are a "warrior", or that you seek "balance" in your life...you decide! Click HERE to go directly to signup / $25pp.

Crystal Guidance: Relax & Restore

Crystals can bring you healing, balance, and messages from the divine. From creating positive shifts, manifesting your intentions, giving you protection, heightening intuition, and a deeper sense of compassion, and unconditional love – crystals can help you to connect with yourself deeper, and with the universe. Crystal Healer, Jennifer Morgan in Crystal Guidance will teach you the basics of how crystals heal, and provide you with a crystal reading. Jenn will show you crystals that will help you along your journey to self discovery and self healing, and tune into any messages the crystals have for you. To prep you for your reading you will be guided through a restorative yoga class that will relax you, and open you to your experience with crystal healing. Restorative, Relax & Restore yoga will be led by instructor Joanna McNelis, RYT.

The Art of Conscious Eating & Yoga Practice for Digestion

This workshop is for anyone who struggles with diet issues of any kind. It will be particularly useful to those living with Digestive Disorders. One of the most powerful things that I have learned through my journey with Celiac Disease is how intricately food and eating is tied to my emotional state, and how these states affect my eating and digestion.

In this workshop we will explore the following:

  • How Relaxation Affects Appetite
  • Rediscovering Natural Hunger
  • Are You Eating to Live or Living to Eat?

The final exploration will be a 75 minute Kripalu Yoga Class for Optimal Digestion. Please join Instructor, Audra Dion in this truly holistic and empowering workshop! Click HERE to signup now / space is limited to 20 mats.
